Artist Statement

Geoffrey Doig-Marx (GDM) is a self-taught visual artist working in painting, drawing, pastels, acrylics, photography, and writing. After a distinguished career as a professional dancer, Geoffrey began his visual arts practice in 2011 following his move to Harlem. Without formal art training, he developed a highly personal style inspired by the people, energy, and culture of New York City.

Working primarily with pastels, acrylics, drawing, and cellphone photography, Geoffrey has created thousands of original works. His art has been exhibited throughout New York and continues to be featured in galleries, performance venues, and cultural institutions.

Biography

Geoffrey Doig-Marx began his career as a professional dancer before embarking on a new artistic journey in 2011 after relocating to Harlem. Since then, he has created thousands of paintings, drawings, photographs, and written works. A self-taught artist, his vibrant visual language reflects a lifetime in the performing arts while embracing the freedom and spontaneity of painting, drawing, and photography.

His work has been featured in solo exhibitions, long-term artist residencies, and cultural venues throughout New York City and beyond. Geoffrey is also the author of Agnes and the Museum of Art and Down the Rabbit Hole. In addition to his artistic and literary work, he is the inventor of the patented Tech Tight Shorty Shorts, designed to help dancers keep their hamstrings warm during training and performance.
